Stony Point is situated a few miles south of the Bear Mountain bridge over the Hudson.  The lighthouse is located on the grounds of the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site.  The small lighthouse that sits high above the Hudson was built in 1826 and was the first lighthouse to shine along the river.  The lighthouse was decommissioned by the USLHS.  They replaced the lighthouse with a steel tower light near the shoreline.

Although the lighthouse is normally open to visitors and tours of it are conducted from mid-April to the end of October, when I visited there in mid-June, 2008, the sign below was displayed.  I'll be going back in the fall to take photos of the Stony Point lighthouse!
