Sandy Hook lighthouse sits in Gateway National Recreation Area, an arm of the New Jersey coast that juts several miles out into New York harbor. The lighthouse was near the shore when it was originally built but now sits far back from both the shore and the tip of Sandy Hook because of the deposition of sands carried north along the shore by the currents of the Atlantic.
