Miah Maull shoal lighthouse is located at the south eastern end of Cross Ledge and was named for a deceased Delaware River pilot, Nehemiah Maull who ironically perished when a ship he was traveling board headed for England ran arground downbound on the Bay.

Construction of the lighthouse was begun in 1909 and completed by 1913.  The lighthouse flashes white for ships in the channel and red when a ship is out of the channel and in danger of running aground on the shoal.  Originally the lighthouse was a rather unattractive brown, being painted and maintained red since 1940.  The light originally had a metal veranda roof around the light.

The last crew was removed by the Coast Guard in 1973 when the lighthouse was finally automated.  The metal veranda roof was subsequently removed when it had deteriorated beyond the point of repair.  When I visited Miah Maull shoal in August 2007 it was badly in need of fresh red paint!
