Old Orchard Shoal lighthouse is situated about 3 miles off Great Kills Harbor and is visible from the beach at Gateway National Recreation Area at Great Kills.  The light was constructed in 1893 and originall served as the front range light for the Gedney Channel with the Waackaack Beacon, which is no longer standing, as the rear range light.  The lighthouse was automated in 1955 and has a white light with a red sector.
