"Pillar of Fire" - This striking photograph of an atmospheric phenomenon known as a sun pillar was photographed at South Haven, Michigan in February, 2002. The effect is caused by light from the sun below the horizon reflecting back to the viewer from flat ice crytals in the upper atmosphere. The entire show lasted only about 5 minutes as the column of light lit the undersides of the dark and otherwise forboding winter clouds ina myriad of reds.
