Big Red's flash signature. Big Red, as the red lighthouse that guards the channel leading to Lake Makatawa in Holland, Michigan has an interesting flash signature. Flash signatures are the color and frequency of flashes of light from the lantern room of a lighthouse that allows mariners to determine what lighthouse they're seeing at night when the can't see the lighthouse's day marking. In the case of Big Red, the flash signature is a red flash followed 8 sec later by a white flash
This pair of images was captured using a Nikon D2H digital SLR camera body with a Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 lens. The exposure data were: 0.7 sec exposure at f/2.8, iso 200 followed 8 sec later by the second exposure.
