"Let there be light!"

This is the heart of a lighthouse... the lamps. Here there are two 1000 W lamps in the center of the Fresnel lens, one active and a spare in case the first were to burn out... The genius of August Fresnel becomes apparent when you think about this for a minute... one 1000 W bulb and a lighthouse that can throw a beam 20+ miles out over the ocean by capturing and refracting almost all of the light generated from the bulb into that flash!
