Outer Island is the most northernly
of the Apostle Islands group and was a logical turning point for
vessels upbound and downbound from Duluth. Thus, the Lighthouse
Board establish in 1868 that a lighthouse on Outer Island was
needed. The lighthouse was built in 1874 and followed a year later
by a fog signal building.
