Staten Island lighthouse sits
in the middle of a residential area, making it more difficult
to photograph. The lighthouse is a 90 foot tall, octagonal
brick structure. The surrounding tress add to the difficulty.
The Staten Island lighthouse is actually a rear range light with
a 2nd order range lens that projects a fixed beam some 18 nautical
miles. The Staten Island light ranges with the West Bank
lighthouse in Raritan Bay marking the center of the Ambrose Channel
the main nautical route into New York Harbor.
In 1968, the Staten Island
lighthouse was designated as a New York City landmark, which hopefully
insures that it will be preserved for future generations.
Hopefully, that will also translate to some new paint atop the
lighthouse!
