Surreal Sunset

During about the first week of September every year, the sun sets between the inner and outer north pier lights at St Joseph. I generally find myself at the lake at sunset around that time as many nights as possible to take advantage of the scene. On this evening, the clouds were uniform when I got there, except for what appeared to be a slight seam in the cloud deck far out over the lake. Having driven the 50 miles to get there, I fortunately waited. I was finally rewarded when the sun dropped through that opening in the clouds as a big red ball. For about 2 minutes I had a spectacular composition before the sun disappeared into the clouds again. The Velvia professional slide film that this image was shot on accentuated the blue color of this very surreal sunset.
